The summer transfer window could see some big names exit Old Trafford as Manchester United prepare for another rebuild. Among the players with uncertain futures, Alejandro Garnacho is quickly emerging as a name to watch.
The Argentine winger was heavily linked with a move away in January, with Chelsea and Napoli both showing interest. While a transfer didn’t materialise at the time, it looks like things might change this summer.
According to Tutto Mercato (via Manchester Evening News), United have significantly reduced their asking price for Garnacho to €45 million (£34.2 million). That’s a considerable drop from the €60 million (£45.65 million) they were demanding earlier this year.
The lowered valuation is expected to reignite Napoli’s pursuit of the player. The Italian club, now managed by Antonio Conte, remain interested and would welcome the opportunity to bring Garnacho to Serie A at a more reasonable fee.
The 19-year-old did manage to get on the scoresheet during United’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United, but that hasn’t been enough to cement his place under Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils' struggles this season and Amorim’s switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation haven’t helped his case either.
Reports suggesting that Garnacho has put his house up for sale only add fuel to the transfer speculation fire.
Despite flashes of brilliance, consistency has been an issue for Garnacho. His potential, however, is still unquestionable. Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright once dubbed him a “massive problem” for defenders — a nod to his unpredictable attacking threat.
Even with his raw ability, it seems United are open to letting him go if the right offer arrives. They’re looking to raise funds for a squad revamp, and Garnacho could be one of the players sacrificed in that process.
Another player whose future is under scrutiny is goalkeeper Andre Onana, dropped after a poor showing against Lyon in the Europa League. Reports also suggest Kobbie Mainoo might be on the chopping block with a modest price tag set.
