Manchester United’s summer spending spree sparked talk that they could enjoy a more productive season in the Premier League.
However, their 1-0 home defeat against Arsenal on the opening weekend opened up a new can of worms – where does Bruno Fernandes fit into the equation?
Having spent more than £200 million to assemble a new attack, Fernandes now looks like an unwelcome guest at a family wedding.
The 30-year-old was shoehorned into a central midfield role alongside Casemiro on Sunday, and the move did not work.
While manager Ruben Amorim is convinced that Fernandes can play deeper for the Red Devils, he is barking up the wrong tree.
United have just under two weeks before the summer transfer window closes to rectify the glaring issue in their squad.
Carlos Baleba, Lucien Agoume and Angelo Stiller have been touted as potential options, and each of them would be solid acquisitions.
However, the standout target is undoubtedly Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. He could be United’s modern-day Michael Carrick.
Wharton sees passes that other players don’t. He would be a riot behind Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
Given that he has made Will Hughes look half decent for Palace, his presence at United would likely benefit Casemiro.
The odd one out in that scenario is Fernandes. However, if United want to get the best out of their attacking investments, persisting with him in a deeper role is not the answer.
Rangers will continue their bid to qualify for the Champions League group stage at home to Club Brugge tonight.
