Manchester United are planning to hijack Arsenal’s bid to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

The unconvincing performances of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have persuaded Manchester United to assess the market for potential goalkeepers this summer.

Onana was dropped for Sunday’s 4-1 defeat at Newcastle after two errors in the draw at Lyon last week. No Premier League goalkeeper has made more errors leading directly to goals in all competitions since Onana’s arrival at Old Trafford in 2023.

Garcia has emerged as an option for the Red Devils, following a string of impressive performances in La Liga. The 23-year-old leads La Liga for expected goals prevented and saves this season, having helped Espanyol to promotion last term.

Arsenal were interested in a deal to sign Garcia last summer but failed to agree a deal. The Gunners signed Neto on loan from Bournemouth as cover for David Raya, but retain interest in Garcia. Barcelona have also been credited as admirers.

However, Football Transfers are reporting that Manchester United are ready to ‘hijack’ Arsenal’s bid to sign Garcia. The Spanish shot-stopper has a release clause of €30m (£25.7m) in his contract, though Espanyol sporting director Fran Garagarza has hinted that the club could soften their stance. Espanyol are also in danger of relegation with the Catalan side currently 15th in La Liga.

“Clause or nothing? No. In the summer market, with Arsenal’s reaching out again last week, there really has to an agreement,” Garagarza said to Mundo Deportivo.

“But if you get an offer on June 14 that is not the clause but is close in fixed and variable terms, Espanyol is not going to say no. We can’t say no. If a club comes with €8m for Joan Garcia, that’s a bad sale, 100%.”
