Tchouameni was recently involved in a training-ground altercation with teammate Federico Valverde, an incident that required Valverde to seek hospital treatment.
The Frenchman has since been fined £432,000, although he retained his starting spot for Madrid’s El Clasico defeat to Barcelona on Sunday.
While there is no firm indication that Tchouameni will be available this summer, Manchester United are poised to act in the event that Real Madrid signal any willingness to negotiate.
Tchouameni has established himself as a mainstay for Madrid over the last four years and was labelled an ‘important player’ by former boss Carlo Ancelotti.
From United’s perspective, the interest in Tchouameni is strategic rather than opportunistic. With Casemiro set to depart at the end of his contract, United are seeking a long-term midfield anchor, and Tchouameni, still only 26, has over 40 senior international caps and is entering the peak years of his career.
He sits alongside Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali, and Adam Wharton on United’s midfield shortlist, but Tchouameni is by far the most high-profile—and experienced—option under consideration.
The door at the Bernabeu is not yet open, but recent events have left it considerably less firmly shut than before.
The fallout from the training-ground incident, and questions over Tchouameni’s standing in the squad, have left Madrid’s hierarchy weighing up their options ahead of a busy summer window.
Having secured Champions League football for the upcoming campaign, Manchester United can afford to be ambitious in their summer recruitment.
Landing a player of Tchouameni’s calibre would be a major statement and provide the midfield platform needed to challenge at the highest level next season.
