Manchester United may finally be approaching the end of one of the more expensive chapters in their recent managerial history. According to reporting from The Mirror, former head coach Ruben Amorim is emerging as a leading candidate for the vacant AC Milan position, a development that could save the club millions in compensation payments.
For a club scrutinising every aspect of its financial planning, that possibility will not be ignored.

United have reportedly been paying £15.9million to cover Amorim’s departure and the exits of four members of his coaching staff following his dismissal in January. Should AC Milan appoint him, those obligations would be significantly reduced.
It is a story that underlines how managerial decisions continue to shape football clubs long after a coach has departed.
There are difficult managerial appointments and then there are situations that never truly find their footing.
Amorim’s time at Manchester United belongs in the latter category.
His statistics paint a sobering picture. A 32 per cent win ratio, 1.53 goals conceded per game and a 15 per cent clean sheet ratio represent deeply disappointing returns by the standards expected at Old Trafford.

Supporters never fully saw the dynamic coach who built an impressive reputation in Portugal.
Sometimes timing, squad suitability and circumstance can overwhelm even the most highly rated managers.
Yet his credentials before arriving in England remain undeniable.
Football’s memory can be remarkably selective, particularly when achievements have been sustained over a significant period.
At Sporting Lisbon, Amorim developed into one of Europe’s most admired coaches. Two league titles and three Portuguese Cup triumphs established him as a manager capable of transforming a football club.

That work continues to hold considerable weight across Europe.
AC Milan appear to recognise that.
The report notes that Milan previously considered other names, including Andoni Iraola before he accepted Liverpool’s offer, while former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner was also discussed.
Ultimately, Amorim’s long term body of work may have separated him from competing candidates.
Manchester United will undoubtedly be watching developments closely.
Any reduction in compensation payments immediately creates greater flexibility elsewhere.
The report states that United are seeking multiple additions this summer, particularly in midfield, while also progressing towards a move involving an Atalanta player.
Every pound saved matters.
Elite football increasingly revolves around efficient resource allocation, particularly under modern financial regulations.
Removing an expensive managerial liability from the books would represent an understated victory.
AC Milan are also under pressure to respond after an underwhelming campaign.
The club’s board made their frustrations abundantly clear after missing out on Champions League qualification.
“For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto,” said a statement.
“The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night’s disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure. It is now time for change and a comprehensive reorganisation of football operations.”
For Amorim, Milan could offer redemption.
For Manchester United, it may provide closure.
First and foremost, there is the financial aspect.
United supporters have become increasingly aware of how expensive poor decisions can be, particularly when managers and coaching staffs leave before projects have been completed. Saving millions in compensation payments would undoubtedly be welcomed.
Many fans would also feel a sense of finality.
Amorim arrived with enormous promise, but the appointment simply did not work. There were flashes of ideas and ambition, but the execution consistently fell short of expectations.
That does not necessarily mean he is a poor coach.
Many supporters would acknowledge his impressive achievements at Sporting Lisbon and recognise that certain environments suit certain managers.
Old Trafford has become one of football’s most demanding workplaces.
Few have successfully navigated it in recent years.
There would probably be goodwill towards Amorim if he joined AC Milan. His professionalism was rarely questioned and many supporters would hope he rediscovers his best form elsewhere.
Ultimately though, Manchester United fans will focus on what this means for their own future.
If these savings can be redirected towards strengthening the squad, particularly in midfield and other key areas, supporters will view Milan’s interest as a fortunate development.
Football rarely offers perfect outcomes after unsuccessful managerial appointments.
This may be the closest United have come to one.
