Manchester United vs Wolves – Match preview and team news

  1. Date: Tuesday, 30th December.
  2. Kick-off: 8:15pm BST.
  3. Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester.

Manchester United team news

Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire continue to be ruled out of the squad due to a back injury and hamstring problem respectively, forcing Amorim to utilise youth and alternative defensive options. Kobbie Mainoo missed the last two matches due to his calf injury, and it remains to be seen if he can play any part in the game.

Mason Mount was not risked in the second half of the Newcastle match and is now a doubt. Bruno Fernandes is still sidelined, after the Portuguese midfielder sustained a hamstring injury during the 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa on December 21.

Three key attacking players — Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Noussair Mazraoui — are all unavailable as they departed for their national duty for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Wolves team news

Wolves will be without midfielder André, who incurred a suspension following disciplinary matters. The Old Gold are also dealing with a lengthening injury list that includes Toti Gomes(hamstring), Rodrigo Gomes (groin), Daniel Bentley (ankle), Marshall Munetsi (calf), and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde (hamstring).

Emmanuel Agbadou and Tawanda Chirewa are unavailable due to their involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations. The club’s plight has intensified, with Wolves becoming the first top-flight side in history to record as few as two points after 18 league games, matching Sheffield United’s disastrous 2020-21 relegation campaign. Their 11 consecutive defeats represent their longest losing streak in Premier League history.

Form

Manchester United

Amorim’s side won against Newcastle (1-0) in their recent PL encounter and currently sits sixth in the table with 29 points. They have just lost one match in the entire December (against Aston Villa). Their recent away form has been particularly encouraging with an unbeaten run extending to five matches in the Premier League before finally losing to Aston Villa last time.

Wolves

Wolves are yet to win a single premier league match this season and lost 11 matches on the trot. Their recent result was a loss to Liverpool (1-2). The last time they avoided defeat was in early October against Brighton and Hove Albion when they drew them (1-1).

Predicted lineups

Manchester United: Lammens; Yoro, Heaven, Martinez; Dalot, Casemiro, Ugarte, Shaw; Dorgu, Cunha; Sesko

Wolverhampton Wanderers: Sa; Mosquera, S. Bueno, Krejci; Doherty, J. Gomes, Andre, H. Bueno; Hwang, Mane; Arokodare
