Benjamin Sesko decision made as Michael Carrick eyes another crucial victory
The big-money summer signing is in fine goalscoring form, but has done most of his damage as an impact substitute since Michael Carrick took charge in January.
The Slovenian international had struggled in his first few months at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim, but has exploded into life with Carrick at the helm.
Sesko broke into the side against Crystal Palace, repaying his manager’s faith with the decisive goal in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old then started in the 2-1 defeat at Newcastle, but did not get on the scoresheet at St James’ Park, despite playing the full 90 minutes.
As a result, he was dropped back to the bench for the visit of Aston Villa, with Amad Diallo reinstalled on the right flank as Bryan Mbeumo led the line, and Matheus Cunha played off the left.
However, Sesko proved his worth once more as a sub, scoring the third goal in front of the Stretford End as United secured an important three points in their chase for Champions League qualification.
Injury-wise, United are still without Lisandro Martinez, Patrick Dorgu and Matthijs de Ligt, while Mason Mount returned to the matchday squad against Villa but Noussair Mazraoui has been dealing with illness.
Carrick has been consistent with his team selections of late, and changes are minimum as the Red Devils seek victory at the Vitality Stadium.
Senne Lammens continues in goal, with Harry Maguire partnered by Leny Yoro in Martinez’s absence.
Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo’s midfield partnership has been a revelation, while Bruno Fernandes is the form player in the Premier League right now.
Manchester United XI: Lammens; Dalot, Yoro, Maguire, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo; Amad, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo
Substitutes: Bayindir, Fredricson, Heaven, Malacia, T. Fletcher, Mount, Ugarte, Sesko, Zirkzee.
