The 39-year-old has arrived with a growing reputation from Sporting Lisbon, where he led the capital club to two Primeira Liga titles during his four-and-a-half year spell.

Manchester United could be boosted by the returns of Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro, each of whom took part in Amorim’s first week of training.

Shaw’s return will be a huge positive given his suitability to Amorim’s 3-4-3 system and the new manager has praised the full-back this week. However, Shaw’s concerning injury record means it’s unlikely he will be thrust immediately back into the side. Shaw has not made a Premier League appearance this season.

Yoro improves a centre-back pool depleted at present, having recovered from a broken foot sustained in pre-season. The Frenchman is pushing for his Manchester United debut after signing from Lille in the summer. Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez are all doubts for the trip to Portman Road and will be assessed.
