Ruben Amorim has some big decisions to make with the spine of his team
Ruben Amorim could be forced into a change in central defence as Manchester United host Manchester City on Sunday.
Matthijs de Ligt has emerged as a doubt for the Manchester derby after picking up a knock during United 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest earlier in the week.
"I think Matta [de Ligt] has an issue,” Amorim told reporters during the pre-match press conference on Friday. “He has something during the game [at Forest] and we have to assess. I think the rest is normal.”
The Dutchman has been one of Man Utd’s in-form players in recent weeks, but his run of successive starts in the Premier League could end at six.
Fortunately for Amorim, he can turn to Harry Maguire if De Ligt is ruled out after the Englishman returned to action as a second half substitute at the City Ground - though he was used as a makeshift striker as the visitors searched for an equaliser.
Elsewhere, Kobbie Mainoo is in contention to return to the Man United matchday squad for the first time in two months.
When delivering an update on the young midfielder, Amorim said: "I think Kobbie is returning to training, so we’ll see and assess for this game already. Of course, he cannot play a full game, he’s a long time without training.”
There are plenty of decisions for Amorim to make further up the pitch, particularly in attack as Joshua Zirkzee struggled as the focal point against Forest and could therefore make way for Rasmus Hojlund who ended his long goal drought in the 3-0 win over Leicester before the international break.

Captain Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho could continue in the advanced midfield roles as Mason Mount’s minutes are being managed carefully, whilst Casemiro could resume his partnership with Manuel Ugarte in defensive midfield.
Lisandro Martinez will not play again this season, while Ayden Heaven, Luke Shaw, Jonny Evans will remain on the sidelines for the Manchester derby.
Predicted Manchester United XI: Onana; Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro; Dalot, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu; Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund
Injured: Martinez, Amad, Shaw, Heaven, Evans
Doubts: De Ligt, Mainoo
