Johan Manzambi has been ruled out of Switzerland’s World Cup quarter-final against Argentina.

The SC Freiburg midfielder missed the round of 16 shootout win over Colombia with a knee injury and has not recovered in time for the last-eight tie. According to Reuters, coach Murat Yakin said the staff tried everything to bring him back.

Yakin added that Manzambi is in significant pain and that the news stunned the squad. He noted momentum had been with the midfielder and that he brings joy when he plays.

Manzambi has been among Switzerland’s standout performers at the tournament, delivering three goals and two assists in his first four World Cup outings.

Yakin was speaking at a pre-match press conference.
