José Luis Fernández Manzanedo has welcomed Burgos’s cup tie with Valencia. According to AS, the Burgos-born former goalkeeper for both clubs will take the ceremonial kick-off at El Plantío, pleased that one of his two teams will progress. He helped Burgos win promotion in 1976 and later won a Copa, a Cup Winners' Cup and a Supercopa with Valencia.
He keeps in touch with former Valencia team-mates via WhatsApp, including ambassadors Ricardo Arias and Miguel Tendillo, and expects to see them at the ground. Manzanedo has warned that Burgos are awkward and well drilled, hard to open up when they sit deep and dangerous on the counter.
At El Plantío he sees Valencia under obligation, while Burgos have the chance to make history, the city club not having reached the last eight since 1981. Ramis's side believe this is their moment, Corberán's cannot allow further setbacks. He also tells locals he feels Peter Lim has only sold and devalued the team, fraying the bond with a fanbase he considers essential.
He won the Trofeo Zamora in 1979 and says the previous year slipped away after conceding in the final match against Barcelona, adding that individual prizes mattered less then. He is among the few from Burgos to have played for Spain, alongside Juan Mata and Chus Pereda.
Manzanedo was president of Burgos Promesas for 20 years until its 2022 merger with Burgos. He says he will enjoy the tie because one of his clubs will win, though he will be fully content when Burgos return to Primera and Valencia to Europe.
