Marc Cucurella buried a coin in the Met Life Stadium turf before the World Cup final, echoing Joan Capdevila’s 2010 superstition. According to L'Équipe, he did so at his predecessor’s request.
Back in 2010, Capdevila, then a Valencia defender, buried a coin at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg moments before kick-off, and Spain later defeated the Netherlands in the final.
The Catalan asked the new Real Madrid player to repeat the ritual ahead of the decider against Argentina. Cucurella obliged.
As his team-mates took their positions, the left-back moved to his flank, dug into the Met Life Stadium grass in East Rutherford and placed the coin.
Capdevila saluted the gesture on X, expressing his affection and hailing Cucurella as a world champion. Now, having lifted the biggest international trophy, will Cucurella, 27, retire from international football as he had announced before the final?
