Marcelo Flores has been ruled out of the World Cup, which runs from 11 June to 19 July.

The Canadian football federation announced on Tuesday that Jayden Nelson, who has 15 caps, has been called up to replace Flores, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in a knee.

The 23-year-old winger has scored two goals in 10 MLS appearances for Austin this season. He also struck the second in Canada’s 2-0 win over Uzbekistan.

Jesse Marsch’s side begin Group B against Bosnia on 12 June at 21:00. They face Qatar on 19 June at midnight. Switzerland follow on 24 June at 21:00.

The Switzerland game will carry significant weight.
