Sevilla’s turmoil has culminated in the sacking of Matías Almeyda after the setback against Valencia CF. With Luis García Plaza, Manolo Jiménez and Diego Martínez under consideration, Antonio Cordón is pushing ahead with plans, having lined up Juan Iglesias and Arouna Sangante.

Fresh concern has arrived as Patrik Mercado and Marius Marin sustained injuries, triggering alarms at the Pizjuán. Mercado, for whom Sevilla will pay six million euros, suffered a knee issue with Independiente del Valle that rules him out of Ecuador duty this break. ABC de Sevilla reports Marin could be out for a little under a month, which should not halt negotiations.

Amid this, Sevilla have been linked with Marco Asensio for the next window. Ekrem Konur reports the club are in the race, with Atlético de Madrid and Villarreal also involved, while Real Betis and Real Sociedad are monitoring a possible return to Spain. The left-footed playmaker has revived his form at Fenerbahçe after PSG and Aston Villa, producing 13 goals and 14 assists in Türkiye this season.

Fitting Asensio into Sevilla’s recruitment policy is complicated by current financial guidelines. At 30 and under contract until 2028, he would be valued by Fenerbahçe at around 25 million euros, far from the younger or free-agent profiles Cordón is targeting.

Even so, it could become a market opportunity if the player forces an exit to come back to Spain. For now, that is seen as the only realistic route for Sevilla to make the move possible.
