Monchi is targeting Marco Asensio for Espanyol as a potential statement signing, according to Superdeporte. The 2026/2027 market is under way, with the 2026 World Cup likely to slow some deals while putting others in the shop window.
Monchi took charge of Espanyol's sporting department in a surprise move after spells at Sevilla FC and Aston Villa. Backed by the club's new owner, he was hired to lift standards. Manolo González's side flirted with Europe before a poor run forced them to secure safety late on.
The sporting director is now looking to Türkiye, focusing on a former LaLiga standout who has revived his career at Fenerbahçe. That player is Marco Asensio.
The Mallorcan has found form in Türkiye, delivering 13 goals and 14 assists this season. At 30, he still has plenty to offer and would be a major threat back in LaLiga.
His arrival would provide an immediate upgrade and raise ambitions beyond mere survival. Asensio brings quality, experience and goals, and it would mark a second stint at Cornellà.
It would not be the first time Monchi has moved for Asensio. While at Aston Villa he signed the Spain international on loan from PSG, and Asensio hit six goals in 17 matches at Villa Park. He did not stay in Birmingham and joined Fenerbahçe this season.
