Marco Grüll spoke to Kicker about the performances of SV Werder Bremen in the first few matches of this 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign.

The 27-year-old Austrian winger first stated that the club wanted to prove to the rest of Germany that they can “perform better”, after the club managed just one goal in their last four preseason matches and lost their first round DFB-Pokal match to DSC Arminia Bielefeld, eliminated by Bielefeld from that competition for the second time in seven months.

"We did not score many goals in the friendlies and looked harmless," Grüll said. "But I can still verify that we have put a lot of work and done a decent job in training. We have since gained even more quality with the transfers coming in, that is certainly worth noting."

The match that stood out for Bremen so far this season was a 3-3 draw at home with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, the second and final match for Die Werkself under Erik Ten Hag's leadership. Isaac Schmidt and Abdoul Karim Coulibaly scored for the hosts, while Werder were down to ten following a Niklas Stark red card.

Grüll added that the impact the match had on the overall mentality of the club was significant. “When we came back from 1-3 down, you could tell that the mood was actually better and everyone had more confidence again. We are all pulling together and we want to keep going,” he said.

Grüll also commented on the competition taking place for certain spots on the attacking lines in Horst Steffen's Werder formation, especially with the arrival of Victor Boniface from Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

“Every player knows that they have to give it their all. I have always been the kind of player who works for the team as a whole, and I will keep that. Additionally, [even if I cannot start on the wings], I can play any position in the attack; that is one of my advantages.”

Lastly, the ambitions of the club, following a 4-0 win in Mönchengladbach and a move up to ninth in the table, were made clear by the Austrian international. "I do not want to talk about European competition right after one good match… but as I said, every player wants to take a step forward. Just as I would not going into the season saying, ‘I do not want to be relegated now’ – that would not be right."
