Marco Silva has missed out on a forward he wanted, as Wout Weghorst left Ajax at the end of his contract to join Twente on a two-year deal.
According to Glorioso 1904, the 33-year-old had been on Benfica's shortlist, seen as a request of Marco Silva and particularly discussed while José Mourinho was coaching the team, but he was no longer a priority in this window.
Weghorst is currently with the Netherlands squad at the 2026 World Cup. Twente finished fourth in the 2025/26 Eredivisie and are aiming to push on next season.
The club now have Erik Ten Hag, formerly Manchester United manager, as sporting director.
In his first comments as a Twente player, he called the move special, said he was proud to wear the shirt next season, and promised to give everything as a player rather than only as a supporter.
Benfica have the striker's profile logged and under observation, and would consider a similar type only if their plan to bolster the attack changes.
