Marco Silva remains Rui Costa’s preferred choice to take charge at Benfica, but talks have dragged on and there is still no definitive decision. Rui Costa does not want the club held hostage by a protracted process.
According to Glorioso 1904, if the current Fulham manager does not accept the project, the next appointment will be a foreign coach. Club figures are said to believe the delay relates to his prospects in England, where he remains highly valued.
Internal assessments are under way on alternative profiles that fit the club’s sporting vision for the future. European pedigree, an ability to develop young players and alignment with Benfica’s competitive identity are among the key criteria.
Even so, there is still hope at the Estádio da Luz of reaching an understanding that brings Silva to Lisbon.
While he remains the primary target, the hierarchy aims to avoid delays that could undermine planning for the new season, so other negotiation channels remain open.
