Marco Silva, newly appointed Benfica head coach, has built a résumé of striking peaks and dips.
According to Glorioso 1904, he started 2011/12 as Estoril’s sporting director, then quickly took the first team and led one of the club’s defining spells.
In his debut season he won Liga 2 and promotion. The next two campaigns brought fifth and then fourth in the league, historic European qualification and Estoril’s best finishes.
That work at Amoreira earned a move to Sporting. Despite a strained relationship with president Bruno de Carvalho, he lifted the Taça de Portugal. A disciplinary case over attire in a cup tie ended with dismissal for just cause.
He responded in 2015/16 by taking Olympiacos to the league title. The Athens stint lasted one season but bolstered his European reputation. A switch to England followed, and at Hull City he could not avoid relegation yet impressed enough for further Premier League chances.
After Watford and Everton, stability arrived at Fulham. He joined in the Championship and immediately delivered the title and promotion. Over the next four seasons he consolidated the cottagers in the Premier League, achieved comfortable finishes and enhanced several players, drawing recognition in and beyond England.
