With the winter break coming to a close on Sunday, Celtic FC Women marked their return to action with a win to kick-off the new year.

Running out 4-2 winners in their first competitive outing of 2025, the Ghirls picked up where they left off last year with another win.

Rounding off the scoring, it was another positive afternoon for young midfielder Maria McAneny, who took her tally for the season to eight goals with her late strike.

Speaking to Celtic TV after the match, McAneny was pleased with the squad’s performance as a whole, with the most important thing being three points on their return to action.

The Academy graduate also praised her team-mates for the work put in during the break out in Gran Canaria, and she believes they will start to see that hard work pay off in the coming weeks.

She said: “I thought we started really well in the game. It maybe took us a wee bit of time at points to get going.

“But we managed to come away with the three points in the end. So, it was a very positive day overall, to come back from the break with that.

“We had a great break. All the girls worked extremely hard over in Gran Canaria. We had a really good game against Femarguin.

'The training sessions over there were great. We wanted to make sure and start the year with three points, and we have done that.'

“Coming break from a break, it takes some time to gel, especially getting used to different patterns of play and stuff.

“But I think all the girls are way more than capable of doing that. The more minutes and games we get, and the more we do it in training, then it will just become second nature to us.”

Another match awaits McAneny and the Celtic squad this Wednesday as they make a quick-fire return to New Douglas Park against Aberdeen.

The midfielder is looking forward to being back out there, with a big few weeks on the horizon.

“We’ve got another game to look forward to now on Wednesday,” she said. “I feel like this is just the same thing we are talking about all the time.

'But we go again on Wednesday against Aberdeen, and then on Sunday after that. So, we will just keep pushing for the rest of another busy month.'
