Marios Ikonomou, former Greece international, dies aged 33 | OneFootball

According to L'Équipe, Marios Ikonomou died on Monday morning aged 33. The former Greece centre-back earned six caps.

He had been involved in a road accident on 23 May. While riding a scooter, he was struck by a car that was reversing. He sustained serious head injuries, underwent emergency surgery and had been in intensive care since.

A PAS Giannina academy graduate, Ikonomou played in Italy for Cagliari, Bologna, SPAL, Bari and Sampdoria, across Serie A and Serie B.

He also represented AEK Athens and Copenhagen, lifting the Danish title in 2022.

He was selected by the national team mainly for friendlies. Ikonomou ended his playing career in 2024 after a season with Panetolikos.
