Former Greece international centre-back Marios Oikonomou has died aged 33 after suffering head injuries in a road collision.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he was struck by a reversing car while riding his scooter on 23 May, on a road noted for a high accident rate.
He underwent emergency surgery and was placed in intensive care. A decompressive craniectomy was performed to relieve raised intracranial pressure, but he did not recover, and he died on Monday morning.
Oikonomou came through PAS Giannina, then played in Italy for Cagliari, Bologna, SPAL, Bari and Sampdoria. He also featured for AEK Athens and Copenhagen, winning the Danish title in 2022.
He won six caps for Greece, mostly in friendlies along with one 2018 World Cup qualifier. Oikonomou ended his career in 2024 after a season with Panetolikos.
