Alex Hughes, the son of Wales legend Mark Hughes, has died suddenly at the age of 38, leaving his wife and two young children. Tributes have been paid across the game.
According to Wales Online, his family announced the news on Saturday in a statement issued via the League Managers Association, and asked for privacy as they grieve.
Alex, Player Recruitment Lead at Grimsby Town, was described as a wonderful son and brother, and a devoted husband to Jessica and father to Sebastian and Leonardo, valued by friends and colleagues.
Grimsby Town said on Sunday morning they were deeply saddened and offered condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Chairman Andrew Pettit said he would be remembered as a valued member of the Mariners family who contributed greatly.
Chief executive Polly Bancroft praised his professionalism, dedication and warmth, noting his positive effect on those around him and saying he would be greatly missed across the club and beyond.
Alex previously played for the reserve sides of Stockport County and Wrexham, then moved into analysis and recruitment with Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde and Morecambe before joining Grimsby as Player Recruitment Lead in 2025. On his appointment last summer, manager David Artell called him the standout candidate from more than 100 applicants, citing his knowledge, experience and football pedigree.
