Mark Lawrenson has been discussing Newcastle United.
Only 23 days to go until the final round of Premier League matches.
The former Liverpool defender speaking ahead of the match at the Amex Stadium.
Newcastle United having played forty four matches in total (all competitions) so far this season.
Twenty eight wins, five draws and eleven defeats.
Now set to face Brighton on Sunday afternoon.
Mark Lawrenson speaking to Paddy Power ahead of Brighton v Newcastle:
“Newcastle have amazing momentum.
“Which is something you certainly can’t say about Brighton who’ve lost three of their last five.
“I just can’t see Newcastle not winning this game unless someone does something stupid and gets sent off.
“Prediction: Brighton 0 Newcastle 2”
I can’t really disagree with any of that analysis from Mark Lawrenson.
Newcastle United hoping to make it eight wins from nine in all competitions.
Eddie Howe’s team have lost only one game, winning all the rest, ever since 2 March 2025.
On 2 March, Brighton got a slightly fortunate FA Cup win at St James’ Park.
The two teams heading in very different directions after that.
United bouncing back with this great form of seven wins in eight games.
On the other hand, whilst Brighton won their next match at home to Fulham on 8 March, they then failed to win any of their next six (all competitions) with four defeats and two draws, only halting that dismal run with a very lucky 3-2 home win last weekend over fourth bottom West Ham. The Hammers leading until Brighton got an 89th minute equaliser and a winner in added time.
As Mark Lawrenson says, momentum totally lacking now for Brighton, even more so when compared to Newcastle United and their form.
The Seagulls are a team who seem to go through spells of playing well, or not so well.
It certainly looks a great opportunity for Newcastle United despite talk of Brighton a bogey team for NUFC.
Brighton have their top goalscorer and main threat Joao Pedro suspended.
Whilst at the other end of the pitch, 15 goals conceded in their last six Premier League matches and at least two conceded in each of those six. That includes the last two home matches when they conceded twice to both 17th placed West Ham and 19th placed Leicester.
In their last seven Premier League games, apart from that one-off at Villa, United have conceded only two goals in total in the other six most recent PL matches.
If Newcastle play well, then the recent form strongly suggests they will score two or more against this Brighton side, whilst every chance of restricting the home side at the other end of the pitch.
