Grêmio were held at home by Bragantino as the Brasileirão resumed, with captain Marlon saying he played despite being unwell amid a virus affecting the squad.
Willian and Tetê missed the match at the Arena due to the illness, which also struck other players, including the left-back. Marlon started on Thursday and wore the armband.
He admitted he was not at full fitness because of the same problem that sidelined team-mates, and said many at the club had been hit by what he described as an epidemic situation in the city, adding it was beyond their control.
Marlon added that once on the pitch players have to give 100 percent and compete, noting he completed 90 minutes despite feeling debilitated.
Beyond Willian and Tetê, Luís Castro had two further absences. Arthur sustained a left thigh injury, while Amuzu was released to attend the birth of his daughter.
With little recovery time, Grêmio visit Chapecoense on Monday in round 6, kicking off at 20:00 at Arena Condá. Tricolor are ninth with seven points.
