Inter President Beppe Marotta assures they ‘have a positive impression’ of coach Cristian Chivu, and reiterates the need for a new stadium shared by them and Milan.

It kicks off at the Unipol Domus at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

There is a family atmosphere in Sardinia this evening, because brothers Sebastiano and Francesco Pio Esposito are on opposite sides, although both remain on the Inter books.

This has been a mixed start to the campaign for the Nerazzurri, who lost two on the bounce against Udinese and Juventus, squeezed past Sassuolo 2-1, and won 2-0 away to Ajax in the Champions League.

“We have a positive impression of Chivu, who we already knew well as he was a great player and a coach of our youth team, before he had his good spell at Parma,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

“He is a profile that is suited to the approach we are taking from this season, a new era for the club. He is working well, and I find some of the comments a bit unfair, especially those who don’t see his daily work in training.

“I believe that in every respect, Chivu is doing very positively, so we are happy.”

Marotta received an honorary doctorate in marketing at the Milano-Bicocca University yesterday and joked about being a seasoned veteran of all things Calcio.

“I have many years of experience behind me and am a little tired by now! You gain experience day by day, we are a club where everyone works well together, we evaluate everything as a group. This is necessary in a modern football club.”

The biggest issue facing Inter and their neighbours AC Milan at the moment is the stadium, as on Monday the local council will vote on whether to sell the San Siro land to the two clubs or block the project.

“I hope that the politicians in the city of Milan realise we need a new stadium. We want to transform this need into new heritage for the city of Milan.

“If this is not the case, then we will have to fulfil our need elsewhere. In the last 10 years, only two new stadiums have been built in Italy, compared to 53 around the world.”
