Neal Maupay’s future at Olympique de Marseille looks increasingly uncertain after the forward was left out of Roberto De Zerbi’s matchday squad to face Rennes on Friday. The Franco-Argentine striker, who turned 29 on Thursday, was informed by De Zerbi that he would not be included in the 21-man travelling party. The Italian coach instead opted to promote 18-year-old Robinio Vaz, rather than persist with the former Brighton and Brentford striker.Signed last summer on loan from Everton, later converted into a permanent €5m transfer, Maupay provided useful depth last season – registering 4 goals and 4 assists in 24 appearances. However, he has struggled to convince De Zerbi and Marseille’s hierarchy of his long-term value, particularly following the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has pushed him down the pecking order.Maupay now joins Faris Moumbagna – himself signed in January 2024 and also deemed surplus to requirements – on the club’s list of potential departures.
