Reds may have Mohamed Salah available for formidable away day
Liverpool will hope to take one step closer to securing a spot in the Champions League round of 16 as they face Marseille on Wednesday night.
The Reds have fared better in Europe this season than they have in the Premier League, winning four of their six matches to date, leaving them just outside the automatic qualification places.
Arne Slot has regularly bemoaned fixture congestion and resultant injuries this season, and will be keen to avoid a two-legged play-off.
Liverpool edged out a narrow defeat of Inter Milan last time out, with much of the build-up to that match centred around Slot’s spectacular public falling out with Mohamed Salah, and the Egyptian king may be back in the fold on Wednesday following the conclusion of AFCON.
Marseille, meanwhile, have had mixed fortunes on the continent this season, winning half of their matches, and could solidify their chances of moving on to the knockout stages with a positive result here.
Their ultras give them a leg up, too, with the Stade Velodrome notorious as one of Europe’s trickiest away days.
Marseille vs Liverpool is scheduled for an 8pm GMT kick-off on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
The match will take place at the Stade Vélodrome in the south of France.

Liverpool have had rotten luck with injuries this season, but will be without just three first-team players for the trip to Marseille.
They are all long-term injuries, too. Conor Bradley is out through the end of the season with a knee injury, Alexander Isak is sidelined for the foreseeable with a broken leg, and Giovanni Leoni remains in recovery from ACL surgery.

It has not yet been confirmed whether Mohamed Salah will play a role. His AFCON campaign ended on Saturday, and Slot is expected to confirm whether or not he will be involved when he takes his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.
He may be inspired to chop and change after an uninspiring 1-1 draw with Burnley last time out, with starts perhaps in order for the likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Andrew Robertson, and Joe Gomez.
Marseille, meanwhile, are without one key player in centre-back Derek Cornelius, out with an unspecified muscle injury.
Second-string ‘keeper Ruben Blanco is injured, too, while Bilal Nadir is a doubt.
A crop of former Premier League talent features in De Zerbi’s squad. England international Angel Gomes, formerly of Manchester United, may well feature, having appeared in 14 of Marseille’s 18 Ligue 1 matches so far this campaign.

So too will ex-West Ham defenders Nayef Aguerd and Emerson Palmieri, and ex-Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, fresh off the back of a dismal AFCON campaign with Gabon, will be available up top alongside Neal Maupay.
As Liverpool make the trip to southern France, they will not take much heart from their recent results. They have drawn four of their last five, with three of those stalemates coming against vastly inferior teams in Burnley, Fulham, and Leeds.
Marseille will pose far more stiff opposition. They have scored 16 goals in their last three, and while nine of those came against a non-league side, Olympique will still be feeling confident ahead of hosting the Premier League champions.
Should they be sufficiently unsettled by the hostile Stade Velodrome crowd, Liverpool may well come away empty-handed.
Marseille to win, 3-1
Liverpool have won each of their last three meetings with Marseille by an aggregate score of 7-1. The most recent of those matches was in November 2008, though.
