After falling 1-0 to Atalanta on Wednesday night, Olympique de Marseille extended an unwanted record in the Champions League: 17 consecutive defeats against teams from Europe’s “Big 4” leagues (England, Spain, Italy, Germany) according to Stats du Foot.

The run stretches back more than 13 years, to March 13th, 2012, when OM last beat such opposition — a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan at the Vélodrome thanks to a stoppage-time header from André Ayew.

Since then, the club have endured a torrid run: 17 matches, 17 defeats. That includes the disastrous 2013–14 group stage, where Marseille finished bottom without a point in a group containing Arsenal, Napoli, and Borussia Dortmund.

Under Roberto De Zerbi, Les Phocéens are again struggling to make a consistent impact in Europe. Last night’s loss to Atalanta leaves them 25th in the Champions League league phase (3 points), with two daunting home fixtures to come – against Newcastle United and Liverpool – to try and finally halt this bleak record.GFFN | George Boxall
