The Foxes are preparing for life back in the Championship after suffering relegation last season.

It has been a relatively quiet transfer window for the club so far, with the BBC reporting that Mads Hermansen is set to depart the team after a £20 million agreement with West Ham.

Conor Coady and Wilfred Ndidi have also been sold this summer, with Bilal El Khannouss linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium.

Cifuentes has confirmed that talks have been held about further player sales at Leicester before the window closes on 1 September.

He’s indicated that his preference is for the club to have a smaller squad, suggesting there won’t be too many signings made once funds are raised through departures.

“I cannot comment on Mads (to West Ham) but obviously there is interest around him,” said Cifuentes, via Leicestershire Live.

“Definitely there are conversations around some players.

“There is interest in some of them. That’s the reality of almost every club in the country.

“Some things may happen.

“My target is to make sure everybody who is here is 100 per cent committed and that everybody is training at a really high level.

“I’m a big believer in not having a very big squad.

“I’m aware the Championship is a league that is very demanding and we play a lot of games, but first of all I want to make sure we don’t have as big a squad as we have now.

“Then, we’ll be ready to bring players in if they will help us to be a better team.

“At the same time, I’m focused on helping players at academy level that are ready to help us.

“It’s going to be a balance in the next weeks.”

Leicester will begin their Championship campaign on Sunday with a 4.30pm kick-off at home against Sheffield Wednesday.

Leicester City's financial issues have hurt their summer business

Leicester haven’t been able to do much business this summer as they’ve had to wait on player sales.

Hermansen leaving will be a blow to Cifuentes, and El Khannouss’ inevitable departure will also hurt their attacking firepower.

Incomings will be needed, even if the Spanish coach wants to keep a smaller squad.

It could be an exciting season for the club’s academy prospects, but it’s difficult to see Leicester earning automatic promotion this year if they cannot compete financially in the transfer market.
