The Toffees were Begovic’s most recent club, but they announced the stopper had left following his contract expiring at the start of the month.

Leicester City in talks with Asmir Begovic over potential move

Since then, the Bosnian international has been on the lookout for a new club, and journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that he could link up with Marti Cifuentes once again at Leicester.

The new Foxes’ boss knows Begovic well from his time at QPR, as Begovic was the number one when he was appointed by the Londoners, and he kept his place under the Spaniard in the 2023/24 season, making 45 appearances in the Championship.

Despite featuring regularly, Begovic decided to go to Everton after leaving the R’s, and he spent the previous season as backup to Jordan Pickford.

Romano adds that discussions have already taken place between the player and the club over a potential contract, although it doesn’t seem anything is imminent.

Asmir Begovic can help Leicester City’s goalkeeping department

This isn’t going to be the most eye-catching signing that Leicester could make, but it could turn out to be a sensible bit of business.

Firstly, Cifuentes knows Begovic, which means that not only does he appreciate his qualities as a keeper, but he knows his character, and what he can bring to the dressing room.

Realistically, he will be signed as a backup, but Cifuentes will know the importance of adding leaders and experienced figures to the group, particularly after Jamie Vardy moved on.

As well as that, the reality is that Leicester need numbers. Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen have moved on, and there are doubts about the future of Mads Hermansen.

So, whilst Jakub Stolarczyk is likely to be number one if Hermansen goes, the Foxes are in a position where they need a reliable backup, which is a role Begovic will take at this stage of his career.

Therefore, this is a move that makes sense for all parties, and it will be interesting to see if Leicester progress with their talks over the coming days and weeks.
