Martín Demichelis has been appointed head coach of RCD Mallorca as the club fights to stay in Primera División. The club said in a statement on Thursday that the agreement had been reached quickly.
He is expected to arrive in Palma on Friday with his staff. He is due to watch the Real Sociedad match and take charge of the next training session.
Mallorca sought a coach willing to take the job until the end of the season, with an option to extend. The brief is clear, keep the team in Primera División. If that target is met, the relationship could continue.
The sporting department also retains flexibility for next season and gains cost savings from a short-term deal. Demichelis inherits a side on a three-game losing run and with the division’s second leakiest defence.
Born in Justiniano Posse, he worked in Bayern’s academy from 2019 to 2022, then led River Plate, winning the 2023/24 league, Supercopa and Trofeo de Campeones. In 2024/25 he coached Monterrey, recording 20 wins, 11 draws and 12 defeats in 43 matches.
As a player he featured for Bayern, Manchester City, Málaga and River Plate, totalling 259, 106, 113 and 70 appearances respectively. He won 51 caps for Argentina and played at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, reaching the final in Brazil.
