Arsenal continued their perfect start to this season’s Champions League with a 2-0 win over Olympiacos at the Emirates Stadium.
Having edged Newcastle in dramatic fashion at the weekend, Mikel Arteta rotated his line-up heavily, making six changes. Even so, the Gunners looked sharp early on, and their pressure paid off inside 12 minutes.
Viktor Gyökeres did the hard work by bursting through the Olympiacos back line and striking against the post, but Gabriel Martinelli was quickest to react, tucking in the rebound from close range.
The visitors, who had won on their previous three visits to north London, weren’t content to sit back. Daniel Podence tested David Raya with a superb volley that drew a flying save, while Chiquinho thought he’d levelled before his effort was chalked off for offside.
Arsenal remained dangerous in attack, with Martin Odegaard pulling the strings. The skipper almost doubled the lead after being played through by Leandro Trossard, only to be denied by Konstantinos Tzolakis. Gyökeres also went close again, bending a shot narrowly over before half-time.
Just when it looked like Arsenal might have to settle for a nervy finale, substitute Bukayo Saka stepped up in stoppage time. Latching onto Odegaard’s pass, he drilled low under Tzolakis to make sure of the points and record his first Champions League goal of the campaign.
It’s now two wins from two for the Gunners in the group stage after their opening victory in Bilbao. With a deeper squad thanks to their hefty summer investment, Arteta has been able to shuffle his side without sacrificing results - an encouraging sign ahead of a packed autumn schedule.
