With big ambitions, but after having only finished the 2025-26 Championship season in 10th place in the table, this is a busy summer for Birmingham City. The club are fixated on a return to the Premier League, and with their team for last season having fallen short, big changes are expected as the Blues seek a place in the top-flight for the first time since 2011.

One of the more surprising departures this summer has been that of left-back Kai Wagner, who has been confirmed to be leaving the club after just six months. Wagner was signed from the MLS club Philadelphia Union in January, but is returning to Pennsylvania after just six months in England.

The player signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the club when he first signed, but the club have confirmed that Wagner "expressed a desire to return to the United States with his family for personal reasons", which led to an agreement being reached with Philadelphia that "satisfied all parties" for his return to MLS.

Kai Wagner has given an emotional farewell to Birmingham City, as he prepares to return to the USA and Philadephia Union. In a farewell message posted to the social media platform Instagram, he said, "The 7 months have been an absolutely pleasure to play for this badge", and, "Thank you for all the support and I wish everybody all the best!"

Among those to have reacted to the post are two of Birmingham's other players, Phil Neumann and Marvin Ducksch, who showed their appreciation for Wagner, with Neumann reacting with heart emojis and Ducksch describing the player as a 'A King' - hinting at Wagner's ability to provide assists.

Although Wagner's stay with Birmingham City has turned out to be brief, it has also been impressive, with a string of strong performances for them throughout the second half of the 2025-26 season. Birmingham have yet to bring in a replacement for Wagner, with Jhon Solis, Dael Fry and a second loan spell with the club for goalkeeper James Beadle having been their summer acquisitions so far.

Kai Wagner's stay at Birmingham City was brief but impactful

Kai Wagner may only have been with Birmingham City for a brief spell, but his stay at St Andrew's was certainly impactful, with a string of impressive performances as the Blues sought to push for a play-off place for a place in the Premier League.

He made his debut for them in their 3-2 win against Coventry City at the start of January, and ended up making 18 Championship appearances for them over the second half of the 2025-26 season, scoring once and registering three assists.

In his comments as he left the club to return to Philadelphia, Wagner has been very clear that his biggest reason for wishing to return has been very much related to his family situation. The player had previously been with the club for six years, and the culture clash of moving from the USA to England seems to have been too big a step to take.

But while Birmingham City fans will be sad to see such an accomplished player leave after just half a season with their club, there is little to be gained from keeping an unhappy player at a club, and the Blues will at least make a profit on him, with the decision having been made in plenty of time to find a replacement for the start of the new season. Birmingham's loss may turn out to be Philadelphia's gain, but the Blues have at least emerged from it all with money in the bank.
