Former Manchester United star Mason Greenwood’s time at Olympique de Marseille looks to be coming to an end.
Greenwood played 129 times for Manchester United, scoring 35 goals.
After legal trouble in 2022, Manchester United suspended the player and, even after his charges were dropped, they loaned him out to Getafe in Spain in the summer of 2023. Greenwood then left the club permanently in 2024 for Olympique de Marseille and has scored 47 goals in 77 appearances for the French side.
This has included 25 goals in all competitions this season, the most he has ever recorded in an individual season.
In spite of this, problems are bubbling under the surface at the French club after the mid-season departure of Roberto De Zerbi.
RMC Sport report that, “given his statistics and market value, Mason Greenwood could also leave Marseille this summer. This prospect alone wouldn’t explain his lackluster performance in Lorient, but the English striker’s attitude has clearly irritated the coaching staff.”
The outlet claims that the player showed very little commitment or effort in his side’s 2-0 defeat to Lorient.
It is also reported that he was one of a number of players who “gave up hope” after going behind in the match, and this has irked the new coaching staff at the club as the side are still in the fight for a top three place.
What’s more, the player is said to be at loggerheads with the club’s sporting director, Medhi Benatia.
There has been much media chatter that Greenwood will leave the club this summer, with numerous teams across Europe linked to the Carrington product.
Juventus have been linked with a big-money move for the Englishman, whilst reports in Spain suggest that Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid could also get involved in the deal.
Manchester United will certainly be keeping a very close eye on proceedings as fees of around £70 million have been discussed. This is particularly interesting for Manchester United as they hold a 50% sell-on clause on a future departure from Marseille for Greenwood, and such cash would certainly add to Manchester United’s summer war chest.
