Marseille’s new sporting director Grégory Lorenzi addressed the sale of Mason Greenwood (24) to Turkish club Fenerbahçe for €40m, explaining the motivations behind the move at a press conference attended by Get French Football News. “I think you all know the complexities of the Greenwood deal with the image of the player,” said Lorenzi during his first press conference at the club. “There weren’t a lot of opportunities with Mason, but I want to be precise when I say that the player wanted to leave the club as quick as possible.”“The numbers are communicated by people that don’t have the right information,” Lorenzi said on critics from supporters that the sale price was too low. “All I can say is that the club got what it wanted. Okay, we thought that kore clubs were going to knock on the door. So the best option was this club that the player absolutely wanted to go to.”The Englishman joined Marseille in 2024 after concluding a loan with Getafe, scoring 48 goals in 81 appearances under managers Roberto De Zerbi and Habib Beye. It culminated with a return to the Champions League, but a chaotic 2025-2026 season saw OM finish 5th, and with a need to sell players due to deteriorating financial position the writing was on the wall for the former Manchester United.
