Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has set a challenge for himself and his teammates following their victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Having gone three games without a Premier League victory, United finally registered a top-flight victory as they came from behind to beat Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.
Palace took a deserved lead in the 36th minute through Jean-Philippe Mateta, who sent Senne Lammens the wrong way from the spot-kick. The penalty was awarded after Leny Yoro was judged to have illegally brought down Mateta inside the box.
United came out guns blazing in the second half, putting together sustained spells of pressure and troubling Palace’s defence.
The Red Devils broke the deadlock when Joshua Zirkzee expertly controlled a delivery from Bruno Fernandes, held up the ball well and fired home from an extremely tight angle.
United went ahead shortly after the hour mark when Fernandes cleverly put the ball into Mount’s path from a free-kick routine, inviting the England international to send a shot underneath the wall and past Dean Henderson’s reach.
Mount spoke to the media after the game and challenged United to clinch a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League.
He also opened up on completing 90 minutes for United for the first time since joining the club.
Mount said [as quoted by the Independent], “I’ve felt good all season. I had a good pre-season under my belt, I’ve been working hard in training every week and not just me, but as a group we’ve been at it.”
“It’s been up and down but we’re in a lot better place (both), me personally and us as a group. We really need to kick on now and win more games.”
“That’s the most important thing, to win. Obviously a difficult result in the last game, but to come back and win was massively important. It’s time to really kick on now and shoot for that top-four position.”
On playing a full game since the start of 2023, when he was still a Chelsea man, Mount remarked, “It felt like a long time! That is a massive positive for me as well and I’ve been working hard recently. I feel really good as well.”
“I mean, I haven’t done it in a while but I feel definitely, recently I have been capable to do that, but whether I am starting on the bench or starting in the game, you have to have the same mentality of affecting the game.”
On what Ruben Amorim said to the players at half-time to inspire the comeback, Mount revealed that the Portuguese coach simply urged the team to stay calm, stressing that Palace were likely to tire late on after playing midweek.
United are next in action on Thursday evening when they welcome West Ham to Old Trafford.
