Massive for Liverpool: Richard Hughes bombshell looks imminent

It looks more and more likely that Richard Hughes will soon drop a bombshell on Liverpool.

Is Richard Hughes going to remain as Liverpool's sporting director much longer? He only took the job on two years ago but speculation continues to be rife that he's leaving this summer.

Al-Hilal want to hire Hughes. There's not really much doubt about that and reports linking him with the job over there have been around for months now.

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri is the latest to make the claim. He suggests Hughes is in advanced talks with Al-Hilal and that would line up with reports that he's supposedly joining at the end of the summer window.

But now there's a little more smoke suggesting a fire. Journalist Ben Jacobs claims that Simon Francis, having just left Bournemouth, is a target for Al-Hilal in a 'senior recruitment' role.

Francis is a former assistant to Hughes, back when the now-Liverpool sporting director held the role with the Cherries. Francis actually replaced him, and the wording of Jacob's claim is notable.

He's not chased as a technical or sporting director for Al-Hilal. Merely for a senior recruitment role. It would suggest that someone else is wanted for that top job, then - so perhaps the person Francis previously assisted?

Again, it's a case of lots of smoke, surely a fire. Reports indicating that Hughes will join Al-Hilal aren't refuse to go away and this only supports them.

Richard Hughes: Situation Summary

Anfield Future and Potential Saudi Move

As of 8 June 2026, Richard Hughes remains Liverpool's sporting director, but his long-term future at the club has become subject to intense uncertainty. Despite having only recently overseen the appointment of new head coach Andoni Iraola, reports indicate that Hughes is in advanced negotiations to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal as their new sporting director.

Strategic Oversight and Summer Transition

While his potential departure to Riyadh is considered "close," the current plan reportedly involves Hughes remaining at Anfield to oversee Liverpool’s critical summer transfer window before formalising his exit. Hughes, who arrived from Bournemouth in 2024, is currently tasked with managing a major squad overhaul alongside FSG’s CEO of Football, Michael Edwards. His ability to navigate this period of transition is seen as a defining test of his executive tenure, as he balances immediate recruitment demands with the looming prospect of a significant structural change within the club's hierarchy.
