Massive win for Arne Slot could quickly turn embarrassing

Arne Slot oversaw a massive win for Liverpool on Saturday. However, it's one that may ultimately come back to embarrass him.

There's no question that Arne Slot needed Liverpool to beat Fulham. A defeat would have created an unbearably toxic atmosphere and one we doubt he'd survive after the dreadful defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.

Fortunately, he oversaw a fairly comfortable one. Liverpool were brilliant in the first-half and went 2-0 up at Anfield and while things fell apart a bit in the second, they kept a clean sheet and got the points.

Though, it was a strange one. This, after all, wasn't supposed to be Liverpool's 'best' team - it was full of those that Slot himself doesn't appear to fancy.

Andy Robertson started at left-back, someone who will leave the club this summer after losing his place to Milos Kerkez. Curtis Jones was in midfield, someone who nearly left in January and is expected to leave in the summer with one year remaining on his deal.

Mo Salah started on the right and scored. Another player who will depart once the campaign is over and one who Slot dropped earlier in the season, including against PSG in midweek.

Then there was Rio Ngumoha. The teenager scored and was largely Liverpool's best player but he's also someone that Slot has been vocal about not wanting to play.

Yet here came their best performance (in the first-half, anyway) in some time. This was a group of players that Slot has largely had in his 'B' team and the only reason we saw them together against Fulham was because they're not expected to start at home to PSG.

It'll be interesting to see how Slot reacts to this, then. Because, again, these are players he doesn't entirely fancy but they're also those the fans call out for.

There are two paths, really. Slot can either make a different judgment call and put faith in those he didn't before. Or he could back his previous call and believe he was right all along and that his 'favourites' have a better chance of success this season.

It's a massive moment, then. Because if Slot chooses the latter and things don't improve, the win over Fulham will be used against him. Evidence that he's been backing the wrong players this season.
