The English Football League have confirmed their appointments in the match official roles for the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg at the Etihad Stadium this week.
Manchester City will be hoping to reclaim the Carabao Cup trophy for the first time since completing a staggering four-in-a-row success within the competition culminating during the 2020/21 season.
After victories against Huddersfield Town, Swansea City, and Brentford, City went on to put in a complete performance in the North-East of England last month to take a 0-2 scoreline back to the Etihad Stadium for the semi-final second-leg meeting against Newcastle United.
However, given huge uncertainties surrounding their performance levels following the turn of the year and off the back of a 2-2 draw away at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon, some supporters are not getting ahead of themselves and thinking about a Wembley trip already.
As for Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United players, they come into this one having suffered a heavy defeat to the reigning Premier League champions Liverpool at Anfield at the weekend in a top-flight encounter.
And ahead of the meeting between Manchester City and Newcastle United, the English Football League have announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Etihad Stadium!
As confirmed by the English Football League this week, Tony Harrington has been placed into the role of on-field match referee for the clash between Manchester City and Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium.
Wednesday night’s affair will be Harrington’s 18th match across all competitions, having so far handed out 53 yellow cards, three straight red cards, and a total of four penalties awarded in the Premier League, Championship, EFL Cup, and FA Cup.
Harrington has come across Manchester City on two occasions during his professional refereeing career thus far; once during the ongoing campaign and once during the 2024/25 season.
The last time Harrington and Manchester City were involved in the same match with the former as referee came in mid-October as Pep Guardiola’s side defeated Everton at the Etihad Stadium in a 2-0 win.
Supporting Tony Harrington from the roles of assistant referees at the Etihad Stadium will be a combination of Lee Betts and Sian Massey-Ellis, the EFL have confirmed ahead of the clash.
Overseeing Manchester City against Newcastle United from the VAR Hub will be the appointed Video Assistant Referee Paul Howard, sitting alongside Timothy Wood – the contest’s Assistant Video Assistant Referee.
Managing events concerning the two dugouts and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola alongside Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe will be referee Lewis Smith, appointed into the role of fourth official for the contest.
