It was a massive result at BMO Field this afternoon. Coming back from an early deficit to secure a 2-1 win over a rival like the Columbus Crew is exactly the kind of grit Robin Fraser has been looking for. While the performance wasn't flawless, there’s plenty to dissect as the Reds move to a 2-2-1 record.
Scoring Late and Holding the Lead - There is a different energy about this team when they are chasing a game late. After Jose Cifuentes leveled things in the 56th minute, the pressure didn’t let up, and Walker Zimmerman’s 83rd-minute header was a masterclass in timing and authority. Most importantly, TFC didn't retreat into a shell after taking the lead - they managed the final ten minutes (plus stoppage) with a level of composure that we haven't always seen this season or in previous years. Closing out a win against a team as organized as the Crew is a huge psychological hurdle cleared.
The Richie Laryea Factor - At this point, it’s not even a debate: Richie Laryea is the heartbeat of this roster. Whether he’s marauding down the wing or tucking inside to create overloads, his work rate and tenacity set the tone for the entire squad. His assist on the Cifuentes goal was a perfect example of his ability to turn a standard transition into a goal-scoring opportunity. When the game gets chaotic, Laryea is the one player who consistently demands the ball and forces the opposition into mistakes, making him arguably the most indispensable piece of Fraser’s lineup.
Luka Gavran’s Heroics - While the stat sheet might only show a couple of saves, the quality of Luka Gavran’s stops today kept TFC in a position to actually win the match. After Wessam Abou Ali’s early header, Gavran stayed locked in, coming up with a massive 1v1 save late in the first half that could have easily made it 2-0 and killed the momentum. His command of the box on set pieces was much improved today, and his ability to remain calm under the Crew’s high press provided the backline with the confidence they needed to push forward for the comeback.
Midfield Mobility Concerns - The most glaring issue remains the pace—or lack thereof—in the center of the park. While the ball movement was decent in spells, the midfield often looked heavy-legged when Columbus transitioned from defense to attack. There were several moments, including the Abou Ali goal, where the Crew bypassed the first two lines of defense with ease, leaving the back four exposed and forced into emergency defending. If TFC wants to compete with the elite transition teams in the East, the lack of lateral quickness and defensive coverage in that central pivot needs to be addressed before it becomes a recurring liability.
Quiet Afternoons for the Forwards - Despite the win, it's a bit concerning that neither Josh Sargent nor Dániel Sallói found the scoresheet today. While Sargent showed flashes of his quality in his first MLS start—notably his holdup play and a few clever runs—the frontline as a whole struggled to generate high-quality chances from open play. Relying on a midfielder and a center-back for your goals isn't a sustainable long-term strategy. The Reds need their big-money attackers to start clicking and finding the back of the net if they want to turn these tight wins into comfortable ones.
Lineup and Substitution Questions - Robin Fraser is going to face some tough questions regarding his tactical setup, specifically the decision not to start Josh Sargent and Djordje Mihailovic together. With Mihailovic starting on the bench and only coming on later (eventually providing the winning assist), it felt like TFC spent the first 45 minutes lacking the creative spark needed to unlock the Crew’s defense. Splitting up your two most influential players feels like a missed opportunity to build chemistry, especially during this crucial homestand. Fraser’s conservative approach almost cost them points before the late heroics saved the day.
Toronto enters the international break sitting in 5th place on 7 points in the East. Perhaps some time off can allow injured players to heal for a fixture-congested April and May.
