Manchester City will begin their FIFA Club World Cup in under three weeks. City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak has stated that his club’s goal is to win the tournament in the United States. To do that, Pep Guardiola will hope that his players return from the upcoming internationals healthy. One player who won’t feature at the tournament for City is Mateo Kovacic. The Croatian international has had surgery on an Achilles issue, which has ruled him out of the tournament.
A statement on mancity.com has confirmed that Mateo Kovacic has had surgery on an Achilles injury. As per Manchester City’s statement, Kovacic will miss the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. He will spend the summer rehabilitating from surgery as per City’s update.
In the end, the toll of the 24/25 season caught up to Mateo Kovacic. He made 42 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City. The Croatian international gave his all for his team. Kovacic also stepped up in Manchester City’s hour of need. With Rodri out for the majority of the 24/25 campaign, Kovacic did all he could to fill the void. He was arguably Manchester City’s unsung hero of the 24/25 season. But in the end, the toll of last season caught up to Kovacic.
Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji also suffered a similar fate to that of Mateo Kovacic earlier this season. They pushed their bodies to the limit before having to have surgery mid season. It seems that Kovacic may have suffered the same fate. The positive in Kovacic’s situation is he now has the summer to rest and recover from surgery.
It is a blow for Manchester City to lose Mateo Kovacic for the FIFA Club World Cup. But he now gets the chance to rest, albeit not in the ideal circumstances. The hope is now that he can return in time for the early stages of the 25/26 season.
