West Ham United are expected to sell Mateus Fernandes in the summer transfer window, regardless of whether the club avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Fernandes has been a rare positive in a challenging campaign for the Irons, who remain in the relegation places with just two games of the season remaining.

Clubs across Europe have taken note of the 21-year-old's performances, includingManchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. Only three players in the Premier League have won more tackles than Fernandes this season, who made his senior debit for Portugal in March.

West Ham paid around £40m to sign Fernandes from relegated Southampton last summer and the midfielder does not have a release clause in his contract.

However,The Athletic are reporting that the expectation is Fernandes will depart the London Stadium, even if West Ham avoid relegation.

West Ham are likely to demand a high price for Fernandes and will use that windfall to fund their summer recruitment.

If relegated, the sale would help facilitate a rebuild designed to secure immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

His sale would be one of an anticipated exodus in East London. Konstantinos Mavropanos has been heavily linked with a move to the Bundesliga, while El Hadji Malick Diouf, Crysencio Summerville and captain Jarrod Bowen are attracting Premier League interest.
