Manchester United’s pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes may have taken a complicated turn. The Red Devils have been in blistering form since the middle of January, following the arrival of Michael Carrick as former head coach Ruben Amorim’s temporary replacement.

United have registered seven wins and one defeat in the 10 games under the caretaker manager so far, and have subsequently climbed to third in the Premier League table after 31 games. The English giants have a superb chance now to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League as well.

Central to the Red Devils’ tremendous upturn in fortunes has been an inspired Bruno Fernandes, who is leading the assists charts in the Premier League this season. The Portuguese has been outstanding so far, but his contract expires at the end of next campaign, and he is already on the wrong side of 30.

There has been talk of a possible renewal, although contrasting reports have suggested that United are divided over their skipper’s future. Nevertheless, it is vital that the Premier League giants lay down succession plans for their captain, who has reportedly proposed his namesake from West Ham as an option for the job.

The next Portuguese Magnifico?

Mateus Fernandes rose through the ranks at Sporting before moving to Southampton in 2024. He arrived at the London Stadium last summer and has already caught the eye of top clubs this season.

The 21 year old has registered five goals and four assists in 35 outings across all competitions so far, operating in various roles in the middle of the park.

A dynamic midfielder who flourishes in the box-to-box role, the youngster has caught the eye with his technical ability, work ethic and calmness on the ball. It is no wonder that Bruno Fernandes has recommended him to United.

A recent report relayed by The Peoples Person stated that Liverpool also have their eyes on the West Ham ace, who could be available for around £55 million this summer. An update on the situation has now emerged.

West Ham have no desire to let him go

According to TEAMtalk, West Ham will not consider Mateus Fernandes’ departure under any circumstances. The report states: “Matheus Fernandes has emerged as a standout performer for West Ham, but TEAMtalk understands the club have no intention of letting the Portuguese midfielder leave this summer, despite the threat of relegation and concrete interest from Manchester United and other sides.”

The Hammers are embroiled in a relegation battle and are already keeping contingency plans ready if they fail to avoid the drop. First-team stars like Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville are likely to be subject to bids in such a scenario, but the London giants are adamant that Fernandes is off limits.

The report adds: “We understand the 21-year-old is viewed as a cornerstone of West Ham’s long-term project. The former Sporting CP prospect has impressed since arriving from Southampton last summer in a deal worth over £40 million – making him the club’s third most expensive signing of all time.”

“It would take a bid significantly higher than that to convince the Hammers to reluctantly part ways with their maestro, and they won’t budge even if they are relegated.”

The report though, suggests that an offer in excess of £50 million could alter West Ham’s stance, stating: “TEAMtalk can reveal that West Ham would demand in excess of £50 million for Fernandes, factoring in his age, potential and the fact he is tied to a long-term contract running until 2030.”

Final Thoughts

United have already lived to regret their decision not to secure the services of Declan Rice from West Ham United a few summers ago. As such, the Red Devils cannot afford to repeat their mistake, especially following their talismanic skipper’s recommendation.
