When Matheus Cunha hobbled off in the 31st minute against Burnley on August 30, United fans across the globe would have felt a cramp in their belly. The Brazilian has been a breath of fresh air in Ruben Amorim’s attack since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers early in the summer.
Although he is yet to find the back of the net for his new team, the maverick forward has kept fans on the edge of their seats with his performances so far.
Cunha has started all games under Amorim this season, playing every minute until his unfortunate injury against Scott Parker’s side.
It was initially feared that the 25 year old could be sidelined for a while, but a recent report has suggested that he could be back in time for the Manchester Derby. The player has now provided an update on the matter.
United have endured a shaky start to the new season, despite investing heavily in the squad over the summer. With two defeats and one win in the opening four games, questions have already been raised about Amorim’s long-term future at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese head coach will be eager to lay down a marker against Manchester City at the Etihad on September 14. Cunha’s presence will be vital to the Red Devils’ preparations for the game, as the player brings an unpredictability to the new look attack.
As such, the Brazilian’s recent social media post will have United fans rubbing their hands in glee.
As cited by The Manchester Evening News, Cunha shared a picture of himself working on an exercise bike in a gym, with the following caption:
“The time is flying.”
The post was accompanied by a clock emoji and a dynamite emoji.
Cunha also posted another image on social media, posing with a UFC armband with a caption that, when translated, said:
“Thanks for the encouragement” (and not “thanks for the moral”, as the MEN translated it).
It is unclear at this point if the Brazilian will make it back to full fitness in time for the Manchester Derby. Amorim, meanwhile, will be eager to partner Cunha with Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo against Guardiola’s team.
The trio are yet to start a game together for the Premier League giants, but that could happen next Sunday.
