Mathieu Bodmer hails a perfect match on taking Caen director of football role | OneFootball

Mathieu Bodmer has taken charge this summer as Caen’s director of football, describing his return as a perfect match after four seasons as sporting director at rivals Le Havre in Ligue 1. He gave his first public remarks before a friendly against Qatar’s Al-Wakrah, having dropped two tiers to work in Ligue 3.

He arrived alongside vice-president Nasser Larguet and two trusted lieutenants, data specialist Julien Momont, whom he called his fast thinking brain, and Mohamed El Kharraze. According to Ouest-France, the inclusion of Momont and El Kharraze was pivotal, and he told Fayza Lamari and Ziad Hammoud he felt a strong alignment of values beyond football.

Aged 43, Bodmer has agreed a four-year commitment and will work with Kylian Mbappé’s family, the club’s owners. He returns to the club that launched his professional career in 2000.

He said he was saddened by the drop but noted there are foundations to build on, from the infrastructure and academy prospects to very good coaches and interesting senior profiles. He added that he had been asked to help the club recover some of its former glory.

Bodmer stopped short of promising a rise this season, saying it cannot be said they will be in Ligue 2 in one year or Ligue 1 in two. For Malherbe it is natural to aim high, he added, but Ligue 3 is demanding and promotion goes to teams that are consistent and structured.
