Matías Almeyda is on the brink of a return to Liga MX with Monterrey after a brief and turbulent spell at Sevilla. La Colina De Nervion reports that the Argentine coach is close to signing as the club builds an ambitious project.
Talks have accelerated with a face-to-face in Madrid involving Almeyda, his agent Santiago Hirsig, and executives Dennis Te Kloese and Walter Erviti. That meeting laid out plans aimed at reclaiming the domestic crown.
The move would end a pursuit dating back to 2019, when Almeyda chose to honour his San Jose Earthquakes contract in MLS. Monterrey revived their interest in 2025 after the departure of Martín Demichelis, now in charge of RCD Mallorca.
Almeyda previously thrived in Mexico with Chivas de Guadalajara, winning a historic domestic double and the Concacaf Champions League.
Should he arrive, he would find a squad featuring former Sevilla players Lucas Ocampos, Óliver Torres, Jesús Tecatito Corona and Anthony Martial. The club has also been the subject of strong talk linking Sergio Ramos with a move to take ownership after retiring there.
CF América and Chivas sounded out Almeyda, but the path appears clearer for Monterrey, with América leaning towards Real Oviedo manager Guillermo Almada. His departure from Sevilla closed a turbulent chapter, and another could open at one of Liga MX’s heavyweights.
