Matias Soulé has offered a seven-word update on his Roma future after returning for pre-season, with Sunderland among the Premier League clubs monitoring his situation.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Argentine was asked at the airport if he expected to stay at Roma and replied, "Will I stay? Honestly, I don't know." He added that he had just arrived and declined to address supporters.
Sunderland have been linked as Régis Le Bris targets a right-sided attacker. Initial interest was said to be tentative, but his agent Martin Guastadisegno is reported to have travelled to England for talks with Sunderland and Fulham.
Roma are believed to value the former Juventus forward at about €35million, roughly £30million. His remaining book value is reportedly around €15.5million, so a sale at that level would generate a profit.
An approach from Sunderland is understood to be one Soulé would seriously consider, with the winger attracted by the Premier League. Sunderland can also offer Europa League football after finishing seventh last season, though Fulham and others could compete for his signature.
Soulé joined Roma from Juventus two summers ago for an initial €26million, around £22million, after they beat Leicester City to his signing. He made 41 appearances last season, scoring seven and providing eight assists as Roma sealed a return to the Champions League.
Sunderland transfer chief Florent Ghisolfi knows the player well after helping to bring him to Roma, a relationship that could aid any pursuit if the club advance their interest.
