Mats Hummels, a six-time Bundesliga winner, 2014 FIFA World Cup champion and one of German football's finest defenders, has announced his decision to hang up his boots at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Hummels, who left the Bundesliga for Italian club Roma in summer 2024 and turned 36 in December, confirmed his decision in a heartfelt post on his X channel.
One of the modern game's most accomplished central defenders, famed for his passing range, Hummels began his career at Bayern Munich before winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles under Jürgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.
He got his hands on another four league crowns upon his return to Bayern, whilst playing an integral role in Germany's 2014 World Cup triumph in Brazil.
Hummels returned to Dortmund in 2019 after three years in Munich, helping the Black-Yellows reach the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League final in his final season at the club.
The 78-time international also won four DFB Cups and six Supercups during his time in Germany.
All told, he made 508 competitive appearances for BVB, as well as 118 in Bayern colours. The Bergisch Gladbach native has also played 18 times for Roma so far in 2024/25.
