Matt Doherty targets Premier League return after Sheffield United move | OneFootball

Matt Doherty has joined Sheffield United on a one-year deal with an option and the former Wolves full-back has set his sights on a Premier League return.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 34-year-old left Molineux on a free this summer after 13 years across two spells, and will face his old club in the Championship under Chris Wilder as the Blades chase promotion.

Doherty said talks with Wilder and a visit to Bramall Lane convinced him of the project, adding he knows the atmosphere well. He is backing the manager to take the club back up, believes in Wilder’s vision and expects that belief to run through the squad.

The Republic of Ireland international has 53 caps and made 389 Wolves appearances between 2010 and 2020, then 2023 and 2026. In the interim he featured for Tottenham and Atletico Madrid. Wolves signed him from Bohemians in 2010 for £75,000.

He won League One and Championship titles with Wolves and played European football at Molineux. On departure, the club labelled him a club legend.

Sheffield United finished 13th in the Championship last season. Wilder has praised Doherty’s experience, calling him a top professional with the desire to achieve more, and believes he can drive standards and act as a culture carrier in the squad.
